The accounting world has been a part of Brian Petersen’s life for as long as he can remember. In fact, his father, Darren Petersen, joined the Medicine Hat JMH office in 1990, the same year Brian was born. His father set an excellent example of what it would take to be a diligent, empathetic, and hard working Accountant and a loving and supporting father, which lead Brian to follow in his footstep.
Always enjoying math growing up, Brian decided to start his college career by taking generals for a year. He then went on a mission with his church for two years in Portland, Oregon which was a phenomenal experience for him (just ask him about that time and he’ll be happy to share everything he learned). Returning from that mission he attended the University of Lethbridge and, knowing he enjoyed math and economics, he decided to get a degree in business. He also recognized he wanted to help business owners, so becoming an Accountant and earning his CPA designation was the next step in his journey.
Brian met his wife Miriam while in his 3rd year of University. When the two of them looked at where they would make their roots to raise a family they knew they wanted to live somewhere rural and Brooks was the ideal fit. It was also a great benefit to know that Brian would have the opportunity to follow in his father’s footsteps by starting his career at the JMH & Co. Brooks office.
Today we are happy to say Brian has earned his CPA designation. Brian’s goal is to be a well-rounded Accountant. However, there are a few areas he tends to focus on more and part of that comes from his educational background as well as his passions in life. Small and Medium Business is an obvious fit for Brian with his Business Degree. He works with investment companies, Oil and Gas, and retail businesses. However, with his heart drawn to the open prairies where there is nothing but fields and pastures for miles to see, he is well suited to work with farmers and ranchers to assist to Shed Some Light on their finances as well.
Another unique area for Brian is in taxation for businesses. He has experience in helping small businesses with taxation and understands how it can affect his business clients. Brian is also experienced with cryptocurrencies and other investments which is a unique area of expertise and one that he and the team at JMH are excited about.
We invite you to stop and congratulate Brian on earning his CPA designation. We are very proud to have him as a part of our firm in Brooks and we look forward to seeing him continue to grow and develop as a steadfast, understanding Accountant that always has his clients best interest in mind.
